Forestry/Wood Harvesting

Program Description:

Do you love to be outdoors? Do you enjoy working in the woods, running equipment, and learning about the logging industry? Upon completion of this two year program, students can earn their Certified Logging Professional certificate. Students will learn how to identify common trees, and maintain and operate a chainsaw. Students will also learn to operate and maintain a skidder, bulldozer, forwarder, and excavator. Students will also learn to properly fell a tree, estimate timber stand volumes, and scale logs, how to operate a portable sawmill and scale lumber.

Wood Harvesting I (A Day)

The students who successfully complete year one will be able to: identify common trees, maintain and operate a chainsaw, skidder, crawler, and forwarder; properly fell a tree; estimate timber stand volume; and scale logs. Students will also have the opportunity to earn First Aid and CPR Certifications.

Wood Harvesting II (B Day)

Students must have successfully completed first year of program. The course will continue from the first year to provide the opportunity to learn the safe and proper methods of maintaining equipment related to the forestry industry. Students will have experience working on small engines including maintenance, diagnosis, and repair heavy equipment. Students will also learn about road building and excavation using the excavator and bull dozer, along with GPS mapping skills. An exciting new addition to the Forestry II program is the portable sawmill that the students will have a chance to use and learn about sawmill operations. Students will have the opportunity to obtain CDL Class A or B licenses, and sit for the Certified Logging Professional certification examination.
