Adult Education

| The Adult
Education Learning Center is a place where men and women just like you
make their dreams come true. All of our Adult Basic Education, High
School Completion and Adult College Prep programs are free. However,
enrolled high school students have to pay out-of-pocket expenses.
People come to the Learning Center at Region 9 for all
kinds of reasons - to brush up on basic skills, to earn high school
diplomas, and to prepare for college and vocational training programs.
They all share one goal: to make a better future for themselves
and their families.
It is unlike any school that you have ever attended. There
are not many rules. We don't need them. Everybody gets a lot of personal
attention. As a matter of fact, we will work with you to develop an
educational plan that works for you.
Our teachers will spend a lot of time learning how you
learn best - and that is the way they teach you. What they want to do is
put you in the driver's seat. We know you will accomplish more this way.
You set the schedule. You set the place. You decide what
comes next. A lot of people are astonished at the difference this
makes. They discover not only that they can do the work, but that they
can accomplish much more than they expected.
Just what can you do at the Learning Center? Most people
enroll in one of three programs: Adult Basic Education, High School
Completion including GED, or College Prep.
The Adult Basic Education Program is deigned to help people brush
up on basic skills. A lot of our students use the program to qualify for
new or better jobs. Some just want to improve reading, writing and math
skills. Interested students can sign up for classes or study on their
own with a teacher. Volunteer tutors also help.
Diploma students can choose from several completion
options. We offer both traditional diploma programs and the GED.
Our traditional diploma program is developed in cooperation with the
Region 9 high schools. Successful students from SAD 43 earn Mountain
Valley diplomas. Students residing in SAD 21 will receive Dirigo High
School diplomas. (Please call for more specific information on earning a
MVHS or Dirigo diploma.)
Students on their way to other schools often choose to save
time by earning a GED. The GED includes several areas of testing:
Language arts (reading), Social Studies, Language Arts (writing), and
Mathematics Part I and II. They are deigned to demonstrate the tester's
capacity to learn. People who don't know any better often criticize
the GED, but employees across the state and every college in Maine
accept it for what it is: a diploma. Persons with disabilities are able
to make arrangements for a variety of accommodations for GED testing.
For disability accommodations, contact the Director of the Region 9
Learning Center Nancy
Murphy.
Employees and colleges trust the GED. They know GED
graduates can learn what they need to know to succeed at school and
work.
The Learning Center at Region 9 also provides a wide
ranges of services for college-bound students. We work closely with the
University College System of Maine at Rumford/Mexico and Central Maine
Community College. We know just what you need to know to make your
college dream come true.
